What Bionic Reading Actually Is
Bionic reading is a text formatting method created around 2022 by Renato Casutt, a Swiss typographic designer. The core idea fits in one sentence: bold the first portion of every word, leave the rest in normal weight, and your eyes supposedly move through the sentence faster because your brain fills in the unbolded letters automatically.
It borrows from something reading researchers have understood for decades. When you read fluently, your eyes don't glide smoothly across a line — they jump in small hops called saccades, pausing briefly at certain points while your brain reconstructs each word from partial information rather than reading every letter individually. Skilled readers already do this without noticing. Bionic reading just tries to make those landing points visible and consistent, so your eyes have an obvious anchor instead of having to scan the full width of every word.
Why ADHD Readers Gravitate Toward It
Search "bionic reading ADHD" and you'll find no shortage of people who swear by it, and the appeal makes sense on its face. If your attention tends to drift mid-sentence, or a notification pulls your eyes away and you lose your place entirely, a row of bolded anchors gives you something concrete to snap back to. It's less about reading faster and more about reading without losing the thread.
A lot of people with ADHD and dyslexia describe it as lowering the effort it takes to just start reading something long. A dense page of uniform grey text can feel like a wall; the bolded pattern turns it into something closer to a path with visible stepping stones. That's a real, valid experience on its own — but it's also worth separating a genuinely useful visual cue from a clinically proven treatment. It isn't one, and no credible source claims that it is.
What the Research Actually Says
This is where most articles about bionic reading stop being useful, because most of them just repeat the same marketing pitch without checking it. So here's what the actual studies found.
The original demonstration behind bionic reading involved roughly a dozen participants — far too small a sample to draw firm conclusions from. Independent researchers have since tried to test the claim properly, and the results have been underwhelming for anyone hoping for a dramatic speed boost.
Separate academic studies published in 2024 and 2025 — including one using eye-tracking technology and another involving several hundred high-school-aged readers — similarly found no statistically significant difference in reading speed or comprehension between bionic and standard formatting for most readers.
None of that means the technique is worthless, though. A few of these same studies suggest it may help readers who already struggle more than it helps already-fluent readers, and it's worth separating "does this make me objectively faster" from "does this make reading feel easier." Plenty of people report the second even when a stopwatch can't detect the first. Focus and fatigue are hard things to measure precisely, and a null result on speed doesn't automatically mean a null result on comfort.
How to Actually Use It
If you want to give it a fair test rather than a five-second glance, a few things make a real difference:
- Start around 40–50% bold intensity. Go higher and the bolded chunks start competing with each other instead of guiding your eye anywhere useful.
- Use it for dense, information-heavy reading — articles, reports, study notes. It's a poor fit for fiction or poetry, where you're reading for rhythm and language rather than extracting facts quickly.
- Give it more than one paragraph before judging it. The pattern can feel distracting for the first few lines and then fade into the background once your eyes adjust to it.
- Stop if it makes you slower or more tired. It's meant to reduce friction, not add to it — not every technique works for every brain, and that's a perfectly normal outcome.
This is the part most bionic reading pages skip entirely. They'll tell you it works and leave it there, without ever explaining how to actually test it against your own reading habits.

Bionic reading isn't backed by strong controlled evidence that it makes you a measurably faster reader — most of the research so far actually points the other way. But "not proven to boost speed" and "not worth trying" are two different things. It costs nothing, takes thirty seconds to test, and a genuine number of people — particularly those who find long text tiring to track in the first place — say it helps them stay with a page instead of drifting off it halfway through.
Your results may land on either side of that split, and that's true of almost every reading or focus technique out there. The only real way to know which side you're on is to try it on something you actually need to read.
