Why Your Shipping Label Costs More Than the Scale Says
You weigh the box. It reads 1.4 pounds. You've priced your shipping around that number for months. Then one day a label comes back charging you for 6 pounds on the exact same box - nothing changed except maybe you grabbed a slightly bigger mailer that morning. That's dimensional weight, and it quietly eats more Etsy and Amazon FBA profit than almost any other line item sellers forget to check.
Here's the short version. Every major US carrier prices a package by whichever number is bigger: the actual weight on your scale, or a calculated "dimensional weight" based on how much space the box takes up on a truck. The formula is simple - multiply length x width x height in inches, then divide by a number called the DIM divisor. FedEx and UPS have used 139 for years, on every single package, regardless of size. Amazon uses that same 139 figure to decide which FBA size tier - and therefore which fulfillment fee - your product lands in. USPS used to be the exception, dividing by 166 and only for boxes larger than a cubic foot. That changed in the middle of 2026: USPS moved to the same 139 divisor as everyone else, though it still only applies dimensional pricing above that 1,728 cubic-inch line. Below that, a Ground Advantage label still bills on your actual scale weight alone.
What this means in practice: a lightweight but boxy item - a stack of stickers in a padded mailer, a ceramic mug in a snug box, a set of coasters - can end up billed at two or three times its real weight the moment your carton crosses that cubic-foot line, or the moment UPS or FedEx handles it at all, since neither carrier gives small packages a size exemption.
The fix isn't complicated, it's just easy to forget while you're taping boxes at 11pm. Measure the actual carton you ship in, not just the product - a half-inch of extra packaging on every side adds up fast once you're multiplying three dimensions together. Poly mailers instead of boxes for anything soft, like apparel, plush toys, or fabric goods, sidestep dimensional pricing almost entirely, since a mailer collapses down close to the product's real size. And if you sell on Amazon FBA, this exact same math decides your size tier - the gap between landing in "Small Standard" versus "Large Standard" can be a dollar or more per unit, on every single sale, forever.
The calculator above runs these numbers for you automatically, using current carrier formulas and marketplace fee schedules, so you can see your real, after-fees profit before you print a label - not after the surprise shows up on your payout statement.
